At SISSA, innovation means transforming fundamental research into real-world impact. The School draws a bridge between academic studies and ready-to-use solutions through dedicated knowledge transfer activities, by promoting strategic collaborations with public and private agencies, SMEs, and industry. This commitment has yielded remarkable re sults, including 9 spin-offs in AI, computational simulation and neuroscience technologies, alongside over 10 active patents in these fields. Key initiatives like “PhD4Innovation” aim to structurally connect PhD training with external leading innovation actors, fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and creating long-term value for all stakeholders.
The Valorisation Office is the unit at SISSA responsible for supporting all this, also called “Academic Third Mission” by promoting the impact of research on society, industry, and innovation ecosystems. Its mission is to guide and assist researchers and students in enhancing the value of their scientific work—through technology transfer, intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and strategic partnerships. The unit works across disciplines to support knowledge and technology transfer from research results to real-world applications, in close connection with innovation networks at the regional, national, and European level.

To ensure strategic oversight and alignment with its institutional mission, SISSA has established the Talent Valorisation and Transfer of Knowledge Committee. The Committee evaluates all initiatives related to knowledge transfer and scientific talent valorisation—including intellectual property management, contract research, industrial collaborations, spin-offs, start-ups, and special innovation projects.
Chaired by the Director of SISSA, the Committee includes members of the School’s leadership and scientific community: the Deputy Director, the Secretary General, the Coordinator of the Valorisation, Innovation and Events Area, the Head of the Valorisation and Innovation office, the Director’s Delegate for Research Valorisation, Innovation, and Industrial Cooperation and one representative from each of SISSA’s scientific areas.
Among its most active members are Dr. Renè Buttò, Coordinator of the Valorisation, Innovation and Events Area and Deputy Secretary General, and Prof. Gianluigi Rozza, Director’s Delegate for Research Valorisation, Innovation, and Industrial Cooperation. Together, they play a key role in guiding SISSA’s engagement with industry and supporting the transformation of research into real-world impact.
