SISSA offers 12 PhD courses across its three main research areas. The programmes combine advanced teaching with research and are taught in English. At the end of a four-year course of study and research, students take a final examination for the PhD degree, equivalent to the Italian Dottore di ricerca.
Doctoral training covers astrophysics and cosmology, astroparticle and gravitational physics, condensed matter, statistical physics, molecular and statistical biophysics, theoretical particle physics, and theoretical and scientific data science. Visit the Physics Area website for individual programmes, research topics and teaching information.
The Mathematics Area offers two PhD programmes: Geometry and Mathematical Physics; and Mathematical Analysis, Modelling and Applications. Visit the Area website for course descriptions, research topics and teaching information.
The Neuroscience Area offers three PhD programmes: Cognitive Neuroscience, Neurobiology, and Functional and Structural Genomics. The programmes are distinct but overlap in scope, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of research at SISSA. Programme pages provide details of research and teaching.
Students are selected annually through the procedures specified in the calls for applications. Consult the PhD Admissions page for calls, application requirements and deadlines, and the Area websites for programme-specific information.
