Trieste, the city of science

SISSA at the heart of Europe's research and innovation

Trieste is more than just a home for SISSA, it is a thriving scientific ecosystem and one of the most research-dense cities in Europe. With 37 researchers every 1,000 inhabitants, Trieste far exceeds the Italian average, making it a true European capital of science. Thanks to this exceptional concentration of research institutions, universities, technology parks, and international centers, SISSA thrives in a networked and intellectually stimulating environment which promotes innovation, interdisciplinary exchange, and strategic collaboration, both locally and globally.

SISSA collaborates closely with the following institutions based in or around Trieste:

  • ICTP – Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics
A historic partner in theoretical physics and scientific cooperation with developing countries
  • INAF–Astronomical Observatory of Trieste (OATs)
Joint research in astrophysics and cosmology
  • OGS – National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics
