HPC and Information Technology Computing Services (ICTS)

High-performance systems and IT services at the service of science

In an era where scientific discovery increasingly relies on advanced computation—ranging from simulations and digital twins to artificial intelligence—SISSA has made digital infrastructure a strategic priority. The ICTS office plays a central role in this vision, providing robust, scalable, and high-performance systems that support cutting-edge research, teaching, and day-to-day operations. From high-performance computing clusters to seamless access to national and international networks such as GARR and CINECA, SISSA ensures that its scientific community is equipped with the technological tools required to explore the most complex questions of contemporary science. SISSA hosts one of the first high-performance computing (HPC) clusters ever established in Italy — a legacy that continues to expand. Today, the School provides powerful and accessible computational resources that are integral to advanced simulations, scientific computing, data analysis, and AI applications across all research areas. Researchers and students benefit from:

  • A modern HPC cluster and robust data center infrastructure
  • High-speed interconnect networks and advanced storage systems
  • Remote access capabilities for flexible work from anywhere
  • Preconfigured computing tools integrated with research workflows

To extend its computational capabilities and foster collaboration, SISSA is connected to GARR, the Italian national research and education network. This connection ensures high-speed, secure data exchange with other academic and scientific institutions.
SISSA also collaborates with major national and international supercomputing centers—most notably CINECA—to scale up research efforts that require large-scale computational power, supporting everything from physics simulations to large AI models.

The ICTS office offers dedicated, human-centered support to meet the diverse digital needs of SISSA’s community. Whether it’s setting up research environments, resolving technical issues, or configuring specialized software, researchers, students, and administrative staff can count on prompt and expert assistance.
 Support services include:

  • Customized setup of workstations and lab equipment
  • Assistance with software tools for scientific computing and data management
  • User-friendly helpdesk for everyday IT needs
  • Consultation for planning and optimizing digital workflows

This personalized approach ensures that everyone at SISSA can focus on their work—whether it’s conducting research, teaching, or managing operations—without technological barriers.
