SISSA has a long tradition in higher academic training. Its educational offer ranges from PhD courses in the three scientific areas of Physics, Mathematics and Neuroscience to MSc courses (Laurea Magistrale), offered in collaboration with other universities, and professional master courses. PhD and MSc courses are taught in English.
Education is closely connected with research. At SISSA, faculty members carry out independent research in collaboration with postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. Multidisciplinary work and international collaborations are central to the School’s scientific activity.
PhD Courses
Doctoral training combines advanced study with research in Physics, Mathematics and Neuroscience. Explore the courses through the three Area websites and find information on admissions on the PhD Courses page.
Professional Master Courses
Specialist training in science communication, high performance computing, and data management and curation, with further information available on the dedicated course websites and pages.
Master Courses
MSc programmes and joint curricula developed with partner universities give students access to SISSA’s research and teaching expertise.
SISSA offers the opportunity for national and international students to access SISSA's specialized doctoral courses and activities.
All visiting students must already be enrolled in a PhD program in their home institution at the time of their arrival at SISSA.
Visiting students are expected to attend the non-individual courses and/or activities in the SISSA Ph.D. group of interest, as well as to participate to seminars and other activities while at SISSA.
No SISSA supervisor is envisioned for visiting students, that should pursue research in accord to their supervisor in the home institution as their primary research activity while at SISSA.
Visiting students must:
- Apply for a temporary resident visa (if needed) and have it in place before travelling to Italy. Please consider current Visa processing times when planning your visit.
- Purchase international health insurance (if needed) covering the duration of their visit - Arrange for their own transportation from the home institution to SISSA and back.
- At the end of their stay provide a report of the work done at SISSA, including courses and activities attended, publications, talks, collaborations, and an overall evaluation of their visit.
Selected visiting students receive:
- Up to 500 euros per month as a contribution to local expenses.
- A SISSA badge and free access to all SISSA facilities.
- Opportunities to further enhance their research experience by participating to SISSA's highly specialized doctoral activities.
External students interested in the ViS should send an e-mail to the representative of the Ph.D. course of interest providing the following information:
- Starting and ending time of the period of staying
- The non-individual courses and/or activities she/he wishes to attend.
- A Curriculum Vitae, including Master and Bachelor degree, including the list of the exams and their marks
- Name of the institution where the applicant is doing the PhD or will be doing at the time of their her/his arrival at SISSA
- Name of at least one senior scientist that will send letters of recommendations
The ViS programme is active in the SISSA Ph.D. groups below. Further details on the application procedure can be found at the dedicated Ph.D. group web-page:
The European Commission awarded SISSA with the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education for the whole period of the Erasmus + Programme. Erasmus Policy Statement
SISSA, through the Erasmus+ programme, supports traineeships abroad for its Ph.D students. By doing a traineeship abroad, you can improve not only your communication, language and inter-cultural skills, but also soft skills highly valued by future employers, as well as become more entrepreneurial.
