Talent valorization

Fostering entrepreneurship and scientific excellence

At SISSA, scientific talent is actively empowered by promoting a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and professional growth by connecting PhD students and young researchers with industry, institutions, and society. Initiatives like PhD4Innovation and JoTTO Fair offer hands-on experiences, interdisciplinary teamwork, and real-world challenges that enhance transferable skills and foster a new generation of scientists ready to shape the future of research and innovation.

PhD4Innovation is a programme designed by SISSA to connect academic research with the world of innovation. It offers PhD students a project-based learning experience in which they work in interdisciplinary teams to solve real-world challenges proposed by public and private sector partners. From problem definition to solution development, participants are guided by mentors and supported by experts from both academia and industry. The initiative enhances transferable skills such as project management, communication, pitching, and leadership, while fostering entrepreneurial thinking and exposing students to innovation processes and career opportunities beyond academia. The programme unfolds over several months and includes a kickoff session, training workshops, regular team meetings, mentoring, mid-term reviews, and a final public pitch presentation evaluated by a jury of experts. PhD4Innovation is more than a training opportunity—it’s a concrete way to valorize scientific talent through creativity, collaboration, and impact.

JoTTO Fair is a national event organized by Italy’s seven Special Statute Schools, including SISSA, to connect advanced academic research with companies, investors, and key players in the innovation ecosystem. The initiative showcases high-potential research projects, technologies, and entrepreneurial ideas developed by students, researchers, and faculty members, with the goal of valorizing scientific talent and bridging the gap between research and real-world application. SISSA participants—PhD students, postdocs, and researchers—can present inventions, market-ready results, or startup concepts to a non-academic audience, gaining visibility, feedback, and valuable networking opportunities. The School’s Valorization Office supports the selection and preparation of projects, offering tailored guidance before and during the event. Participating in JoTTO Fair is not only a chance to highlight research impact—it’s a platform for building new partnerships and exploring careers in innovation and entrepreneurship.
