Quality in Education

Excellence in training the next generation of global scientists

SISSA’s educational model is designed to prepare researchers who can thrive in the world’s most advanced scientific and technological contexts. Inspired by the best international standards, the School offers a rigorous and immersive PhD experience, where students are integrated into high-level research groups from the start, co-authoring scientific publications and participating in global academic discourse.

This path is supported by an inclusive and intellectually vibrant environment, where students benefit from financial stability, personalized mentorship, career development services, and well-being support—essential for navigating the challenges of a demanding research career.

SISSA’s impact goes beyond PhD training: through advanced Master’s programmes and joint degrees with top universities, the School also contributes to the education of professionals working at the frontiers of innovation. Quality is constantly monitored through structured evaluations and student feedback, while elected representatives ensure that the student voice is actively included in academic decision-making.

At SISSA, education means more than academic excellence: it’s a transformative journey that shapes scientists—and citizens—equipped to lead in today’s complex global landscape.

SISSA is an Italian university with the soul of an international research institute. Since its foundation, it has embraced a postgraduate-only model inspired by the world’s top academic institutions, allowing it to dedicate all resources to advanced scientific training. Its structure reflects that of elite global schools, favouring excellence, specialization, and scientific autonomy.

The academic environment is fully international: English is the language of teaching, research, and institutional life. Over 75% of SISSA’s faculty have been recruited from leading foreign institutions, and more than 30% of PhD students come from outside Italy, representing over 30 different nationalities. This diversity creates a stimulating and inclusive academic community, where cultural exchange and scientific openness are part of everyday life.

At SISSA, becoming a scientist doesn’t begin after graduation—it starts on day one. Every PhD student joins an active research group led by a Principal Investigator and immediately contributes to cutting-edge scientific work. This hands-on approach ensures that students are not passive learners, but active participants in real research, often co-authoring papers alongside internationally recognized scientists.

Throughout their journey, students benefit from a rich and stimulating academic environment. Each PhD programme offers tailored advanced courses, complemented by weekly seminars, international workshops, and high-level colloquia featuring speakers from the world’s top research institutions. This constant exposure to the global scientific community nurtures both deep specialization and cross-disciplinary curiosity.

In addition to scientific training, SISSA provides a wide range of courses dedicated to soft skills development—scientific writing, communication, project management, data stewardship, and public speaking—essential tools for navigating complex research careers and building a professional identity in academia or industry.

By the end of their doctoral path, SISSA students are not only well-trained researchers—they are already integrated into the international scientific network, with publications, collaborations, and professional connections that prepare them for impactful careers in academia, industry, and beyond.

As one of Italy’s seven Scuole Superiori ad Ordinamento Speciale (SSOS), SISSA holds a unique position in the national and international academic landscape. Its PhD programmes, shaped by high standards, rigorous selection, and full academic autonomy, equip graduates with the skills and mindset to thrive in research, innovation, and beyond.

SISSA alumni have built remarkable careers in academia, industry, and public institutions around the world. From CERN to Caltech, from EMBL to ETH Zurich, and from Google, Amazon, and IBM to successful start-ups, they are contributing to scientific progress, technological innovation, and policy development at the highest levels. This global impact speaks to the School’s ability to train not only researchers, but future leaders in science and innovation.

Pursuing a career in high-level research is intellectually rewarding—but also demanding, competitive, and often stressful. At SISSA, students are supported not only as future scientists, but as individuals navigating an intense personal and professional journey. Every PhD student receives a full scholarship, ensuring financial stability and the freedom to focus entirely on research. The School offers comprehensive services that include housing support, assistance with visas and residence permits, career guidance, and mobility grants for conferences and international visits.

But support goes far beyond logistics. SISSA fosters a vibrant, inclusive campus life with shared spaces for study and social interaction, language courses, and a dedicated psychological support network. Mental well-being, diversity, and respect for each student's background are treated as core components of academic success. Through mentorship, peer networks, and a strong sense of community, SISSA helps students grow not only as researchers, but as confident, resilient individuals ready to thrive in the global scientific arena.

While PhD training is at the core of SISSA’s mission, the School has long extended its educational impact beyond doctoral programmes. Over the years, SISSA has become a cultural and intellectual hub that supports the training of both students and professionals in emerging fields, combining scientific excellence with forward-looking educational models.

Through advanced Master's programmes—such as the long-established Master in Science Communication, the international Master in High Performance Computing, and the Master in Data Management and Curation—SISSA offers highly specialized training that addresses the needs of today’s innovation-driven economy. These programmes often involve collaboration with leading universities, research centres, and private companies, and are designed to bridge science, technology, and society.

This commitment to advanced education reflects SISSA’s broader identity as a laboratory of academic innovation. Its ability to anticipate trends, create new organizational models, and connect disciplines makes it a reference point not only for postgraduate research, but for lifelong learning and professional development in science and innovation.

SISSA adopts structured mechanisms to ensure the continuous improvement of its teaching programmes. Quality assurance is a key part of the School’s governance and is monitored through regular internal assessments and compliance with national evaluation standards. Teaching quality is periodically reviewed, with the support of dedicated structures and in alignment with the Integrated Activity and Organization Plan (PIAO).

Student feedback plays a central role in this process. PhD students are invited to evaluate courses and teaching activities, providing insights that are used to adapt and refine the educational offer. In addition, students participate actively in the life of the School through formal representation bodies. Elected student representatives sit on key institutional committees, including the Academic Senate, the Board of Directors, the Evaluation Unit, and the Research and Teaching Committees.

This collaborative approach ensures that students are not only recipients of high-quality education, but also contributors to the shaping of a learning environment that meets their evolving needs and expectations.
